The number of workers from countries outside the European Union is higher in the UK than from the EU. This has never happened before. These numbers are surprising when you consider that one of the reasons the EU left the bloc was to better control immigration.
One of the reasons the UK decided to leave the European Union (formally on January 31, 2020) was a desire to better control immigration. Did it work? Given that the number of foreign workers from outside the EU is currently higher than from the EU, no.
Europeans are in no hurry to work in the UK
Last year, for the first time since 2010, the number of foreign workers from outside the European Union in the UK was higher than from EU countries, according to tax and customs data HMRC. The Times reports.
In the 12 months to the end of March this year, 46,457 work visas were issued to citizens of EU countries (from the beginning of 2021 they must apply for visas if they want to work) and 740,075 such visas to citizens of other countries. A third of these were awarded to citizens of India, followed by citizens of the United States, the Philippines, Nigeria and Zimbabwe.
Third country nationals interested in citizenship
In June 2016, when the referendum on leaving the EU was held, less than 2.2 million EU citizens and 1.6 million people from other countries were working. In January 2020, there were almost 2.5 million and 1.9 million, respectively.
Citizens of other countries are much more likely to commit their future to the UK, as evidenced by the fact that they are more likely than EU citizens to apply for citizenship. In the 12 months before the end of March this year, 200,362 such applications were submitted, of which 152.7 thousand were submitted. profits from citizens of other countries, and 47.6 thousand from EU residents.
