Will the government extend the loan holiday? Two questions will be decisive

Must read

Perhaps next month we will know the decision to extend the loan holiday. According to the portal Business Insider Polska, the government is again inclined to help borrowers. However, this will depend on two factors.

Recall that the law on credit holidays came into force on July 29 last year. He suggested the possibility of suspending the payment of installments on a home loan in zloty for four months in 2022 and for four months this year. However, in recent months, there have been signals from the government about the possibility of extending the loan holiday for another year. Earlier this week, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki commented on the issue, stressing that a decision would be made in June or July.

Premier on extending loan holidays

– The government is analyzing this problem in terms of problems with the repayment of loans by the Poles, as well as in connection with the inflation that we predict for the next year, and the level of interest rates, which somewhat correlates with inflation. Then we will make appropriate decisions. Probably June, July will be the time when we will signal this and make appropriate decisions in this matter - said the head of government.

According to the findings of the Business Insider Polska website, the government tends to extend the loan holidays. However, this will depend on two factors - the inflation mentioned by the Prime Minister and the level of interest rates (according to some economists, there will be conditions for easing monetary policy at the end of this year, but expectations on this matter are cooled down by the President of the National Bank of Poland, Adam Glapinski) , as well as the decision of the CJEU on credits in francs. This will be another ruling on franking payments, but this time, according to KNF calculations, it could be disastrous for banks and cost them up to PLN 100 billion.

Key verdict

According to the interlocutors of the portal in the government, if the CEC meeting scheduled for June 15 ends with a very negative decision for the banking sector, then the climate for credit holidays may change, and PiS will refuse to extend them. However, it is extremely important when the decision of the Tribunal becomes known. The head of the KNF proposed to the bankers not in the middle of next month, but only after the holidays. In such a situation, the ruling camp may also postpone the decision to extend the loan holiday.
