Netflix released a short film called The story of Dodi and Diana to mark the release of the penultimate installment of their epic dramatic saga, Crown. Season six marks the end of the genre-defining prestigious royal saga, a series that has captivated audiences since 2016. Part 1 comes out today on Netflix. The first four episodes focus on the burgeoning relationship between Princess Diana (Elizabeth Debicki) and Dodi Fayed (Khalid Abdullah), culminating in a fateful road trip through Paris with devastating historical consequences.

During the divorced couple’s first summer, Prince Charles (Dominic West) and Princess Diana go on very different vacations with their sons. Diana, wooed by the Fayeds in the south of France, introduces the young princes to a life of luxury yachts, video games and movie nights. Meanwhile, Charles is sticking to tradition at Balmoral. Press comparisons, fueled by the dangerous enthusiasm of the paparazzi and elements of the royal press teamplay out in the media.

As the appeal of yacht life fades and the media attention becomes overwhelming, Diana yearns to be reunited with her boys, who are back at Balmoral. The redirect to Paris marks a turning point amid an intensifying and aggressive media crackdown. Following the tragic news of Diana and Dodi’s fatal car crash, the Queen was overwhelmed by a massive outpouring of public grief (Imelda Staunton) by surprise. Shock waves reverberate through the palace, and Mohamed Al Fayed (Salim Dow) is experiencing the loss of his beloved son. Hoping that the shared grief would bring him closer to the royal family, he instead finds himself increasingly shunned.
