Less favorable tables of life. ZUS President explains how to understand them

Must read

Life expectancy is increasing and therefore life expectancy tables compiled each year will change. ZUS uses them when determining the amount of the pension. The new ones will be less favorable for people who want to retire after April 1st. President of the Institute of Social Insurance prof. Gertrud Uschinska reminded that the change does not matter for people who are already receiving benefits.

Life tables are a calculation showing the average number of months that people between the ages of 30 and 90 should live. This is one of the parameters that ZUS takes into account when determining the amount of the old-age pension. The tables change every year and are valid from 1 April to 31 March of the following year.

Tables of life. The new calculations will come into effect on April 1.

New calculations will come into effect soon, less favorable for people planning to retire. Why? Life expectancy declined during the pandemic and is now on the rise.

The CSO table of average life expectancy for men and women released today by the Central Statistical Bureau shows that a woman who decides to retire at retirement age (60 years) will receive a benefit, the amount of which is calculated by ZUS by dividing the accumulated capital by 254.3 months of expected duration life, while a year ago it was 238.9.

On the other hand, a man who has reached the age of 65 and decides to retire from work will receive an old-age pension, which will be calculated on the basis of 210 months of remaining life, compared with 196.2 months last year.

- Life expectancy, however, is still less than in the latest pre-pandemic table of the Central Statistical Office, i.e. since 2020, which was created on the basis of mortality data in 2019, notes the assessment sent to the PAP by the president of the Social Insurance Institute, prof. Gertrude Ushinska.

Retirement age. Who will be affected by the changes in life expectancy tables?

She added that ZUS will start using the new tables when calculating the amount of newly assigned pensions from April 1.

- The latest life expectancy table allows you to calculate the pension of a person aged 60 years lower by 6.1 percent, and a person aged 65 years old - by 6.6 percent. than based on the previous table,” the ZUS President also wrote.

The President also recalled that boards are important for people retiring, and not for those who have already retired from professional activities.

For example, a 60-year-old with a capital of 500,000 PLN will receive a pension of 1966.18 PLN, i.e. 127 PLN less (due to the fact that the capital will be divided into 254.3 instead of 238.9 months). On the other hand, a 65-year-old with a capital of 500 thousand PLN will receive a pension of 2,380.95 PLN, i.e. 167 PLN less (due to the fact that the capital will be divided into 210.0 instead of 196.2 months) .

60-year-old woman with a capital of 500 thousand. PLN can get about PLN 54 more than based on the 2020 table (capital divided by 254.3 instead of 261.5 months), and a 65-year-old man with the same capital can get about PLN 83 more (capital). divided by 210.0 instead of 217.6 months).
