On Thursday, March 23, West Pomeranian farmers announced the start of a thirty-day protest. They want to drive the tractors to Szczecin and set up a “green city” near the Voivodship Office. They demand money.
- Firstly, we will symbolically go to the gates of the Szczecin shipyard and lay flowers there. As the shipyard was liquidated, so now we are threatened with liquidation - says “Wprost” Eduard Kosmal, deputy chairman of the West Pomeranian provincial council of the NSPZ of individual farmers “Solidarity”. According to Kosmal, at least several dozen tractors should enter the city on Thursday.
Farmers want a battle shield
As Edward Kosmal says, the most important postulate is the introduction of a combat shield. - Sort of like a covid shield. We want specific compensation for the losses that each farm is currently suffering. Uncontrolled import of grain from Ukraine completely destabilized the grain market, prices fell by 50 percent - speaks. According to Kosmal, this is not the only problem, because, as he claims, fertilizers are also prohibited in Ukrainian grain. – These cereals are mixed with Polish ones, and therefore no one wants to buy goods from Polish farmers – thinks.
The protesting farmers emphasize that cooperation between the EU countries and Ukraine in the field of agriculture and the agri-food industry cannot take place at the expense of Polish farms. “The accusation of Polish farmers of not understanding Ukraine, which is fighting for freedom, is unacceptable. We understand the scale and importance of this struggle. The Polish government and the European Commission are responsible for the destabilization of agricultural markets in our country. - they write in the announcement of the protest in Szczecin.
Eduard Kosmal also names the amount of 30 million. euros allocated by the European Commission for intervention in the agricultural market. - Nothing! The amount is ridiculous! - speaks.
Eggs at the Minister of Agriculture
West Pomeranian farmers are demanding that Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Henryk Kowalczyk meet with them personally. On Thursday, Kowalczyk was in Jasionka near Rzeszow for the European Agricultural Forum. Peasants wearing vests with the inscription “deceived village” came to the rally and threw eggs at the minister.
Agricultural unions are not letting go and the situation is still tense. Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki also met with farmers’ representatives in early March. As a government representative said after the meeting, a decision was made to compensate for the decline in grain prices. “So far we’ve only heard promises” comments Edward Kosmal.
