India will require mobile devices sold in the country to have a USB-C charging port.
The Indian Bureau of Standards sets standards for two common types of chargers - one for mobile devices and possibly another for wearable electronics such as smartwatches, said Rohit Kumar Singh, secretary at the Ministry of Consumer Affairs.
Single charging ports on all new devices sold in India will be introduced from 2025.
Soyuz and USB-C
In early December, the European Union decided to unify the charger standard. The content of the directive was published on 10 December.
The directive will come into force on 27 December. After that, companies will have two years to adapt to the new requirements. On December 28, 2024, a USB-C port will become mandatory for all new smartphones, e-readers, tablets, headphones and handheld consoles that will hit the European market.
apple reluctantly
Apple doesn’t want to give up its own Lightning charging port found on all iPhones and some iPads. But the company has confirmed that it will be building an iPhone with a USB-C port to comply with EU regulations.
The company doesn’t seem to be happy about it. Greg Joswiak, Apple’s senior vice president of worldwide marketing, said he would “obviously” be forced to “obey” the new law at The Wall Street Journal’s Tech Live conference. He added that Apple “doesn’t mind governments telling us what they want to achieve,” but Apple engineers are “pretty smart” and have already come up with better ways to achieve goals.
