“civilizational revolution”. The Saudis are planning to build an extraordinary city straight out of science fiction

Must read

Saudi Arabia wants to create a unique city. The project is admired, but also the worst associations with many science fiction books and films.

Saudi Arabia presented the urban project The Line. It should stand on the shores of the Gulf of Aqaba in the Red Sea, and if it is built, it will be the only one of its kind.

Line, city of the future

The Line is supposed to be inhabited by 9 million people, but instead of a huge space, it will occupy only 34 square kilometers. “We are designing them to enable a healthier and more self-sufficient life” - say the authors of the project about the film, demonstrating their vision. “The urban community will be organized in three dimensions. Residents will have access to all their needs within a 5-minute walk.” - we hear. We are talking about access to both jobs and shops, services and places of entertainment and recreation. A trip around the city from one end to the other will take only 20 minutes. All thanks to a specially planned communication infrastructure.

Designers proceed from the fact that no one in the city will have a car, since it will not be needed. The result should be zero emissions of carbon dioxide and harmful substances. Building a city from scratch at a time when modern technology is possible is to allow some services, including, for example, the delivery of goods, to be carried out using autonomous vehicles.

170 kilometers long

The city will be 500 meters high, 200 meters wide and as much as 170 kilometers long. The side, outer walls of the building will be covered with a mirror facade, which will not only fit the city into its surroundings, but also give it an unusual effect. The architects assure that both electricity and water will be possible thanks to completely renewable and environmentally friendly sources.

However, for anyone who has ever dealt with science fiction books or films, bad associations immediately arise. Vertical city building, social stratification, the rich live in the clouds and the poor at street level. We have already seen all this in different versions, both in cinema and in literature. Will The Line be such a project? I do not think so. However, it is not known when it will be built at all.
