The hybrid Opel Astra is ready to order. The car has two body styles

Must read

Electric, plug-in hybrid or combustion engine version – customers of the current generation Opel Astra could choose from different drive types. The offer has now been expanded with another variant: the Opel Astra and Opel Astra Sports Tourer can now also be ordered in a version with 48 V hybrid technology.

Prices for the new Astra Hybrid start from PLN 135,500.

What does hybrid technology offer? According to Opel: a wide range of benefits, especially for customers who are “taking their first steps” in the field of electromobility, as well as for drivers who drive in urban environments with frequent starts and stops, thanks to the recuperation function: compared to its engine-powered counterpart internal combustion fuel consumption and CO2 emissions in the new Astra Hybrid are approximately 14 percent lower.

At low speeds in city driving, owners can drive purely on electric power and therefore have no local emissions. There is no need for a power outlet or charging station as the Astra Hybrid’s battery charges while decelerating. All elements of the drive system are coordinated with each other, which also ensures a high level of driving comfort. Thanks to its compact dimensions, the hybrid system takes up little valuable space inside.

– We recently released one of the first fully electric station wagon models – the Astra Sports Tourer Electric. We are now once again expanding the range of drives available for our best-selling compact class. The new Astra and Astra Sports Tourer Hybrid with 48V technology are an affordable alternative for anyone who wants to reduce their vehicle’s fuel consumption and exhaust emissions without the need for an external power source, says Krzysztof Gacek, Brand Director for Opel Poland.

Reduced fuel consumption

The powertrain of the new Astra and Astra Sports Tourer Hybrid includes a lithium-ion battery that automatically charges under certain driving conditions and a new 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine with 100 kW/136 hp. The three-cylinder engine, developed specifically for hybrid use, is available in combination with a new electrified six-speed dual-clutch transmission and a 21 kW/28 hp electric motor.

Thanks to the combination of petrol and electric engine, the five-door Astra Hybrid’s fuel consumption and CO2 emissions are reduced by around 14 percent compared to the non-electrified Astra 1.2 Turbo with eight-speed automatic transmission.

Hybrid drive operation

In the city, the electric drive supports the gasoline engine during acceleration and departure. The electric motor increases torque, especially at low engine speeds, which has a positive effect on driving dynamics and reduces CO2 emissions. At low speeds, the electric motor also enables all-electric driving for a maximum of one kilometer or 50 percent of city driving time. When the Astra Hybrid slows down at higher speeds, the gasoline engine switches off and the electric motor acts as a generator, charging the hybrid system’s 48-volt battery.

Depending on preferences, the driver of the Astra and Astra Sports Tourer Hybrid can choose one of three driving modes: Eco, Normal and Sport. From the moment of launch, the new Astra Hybrid accelerates to 100 km/h in 9 seconds and can reach a top speed of 210 km/h.

The advantage is the compact design of the system. The electric motor is integrated into the gearbox housing and the 48-volt battery is located under the left front seat, giving hybrid users full luggage space, which in the case of the Astra Sports Tourer Hybrid is up to 1,634 liters.

Standard equipment and options

All Astra and Astra Sports Tourer Hybrid models come standard with a wireless multimedia system with a 10-inch color touchscreen, compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. If necessary, a large amount of information can also be conveniently displayed on the optional Intelli-HUD head-up display, and smartphones can be charged wirelessly.

In addition to the standard driver assistance systems, optional technologies include Intelli-Lux anti-glare LED pixel headlights with 168 LED elements and a 360-degree Intelli-Vision camera (standard on GS). There are also keyless systems “Keyless Start” and “Keyless Open & Start”. In addition, the Astra Sports Tourer Hybrid is equipped with an electronically opened and closed rear door with touch control.
