Today, June 1, is Children’s Day. In recent years, the number of road accidents involving children has significantly decreased, according to the Institute of Road Transport. This decline over the decade was as much as 51 percent.
An analysis of data from the Polish Road Safety Service (ITS) shows that children and adolescents are among the least vulnerable groups of road users in Poland - in relation to the European average. It is important to note that in recent years the number of road traffic accidents involving road users aged 0 to 14 years has significantly decreased - over the past decade, the number of road traffic accidents with their participation has decreased by 51%.
Children from an early age learn how to behave in traffic. Through caring, good example and following the rules, adults have a huge impact on developing their responsibility as road users. This is an extremely important process that builds a solid foundation and the skills needed to move children safely on the roads.
“Education is key because as they get older, children increasingly travel on the roads on their own, which leads to an increased risk of accidents. Therefore, preparing them for safe participation in traffic becomes the responsibility of guardians. Let’s add debt, which is an investment in the health and lives of the smallest, says Maria Dombrowska-Lorantz, head of the ITS Road Safety Center.
The statistics are favorable
An analysis of data from the Polish Road Safety Service (ITS) on traffic accidents in Poland shows that children (0-14 years old) and adolescents (15-17 years old) are the least endangered groups of road users. In favor of the youngest road users is the fact that the number of accidents involving them is gradually decreasing. In 2012, there were 3684 accidents with children (0-14 years old) (9.94% of the total). Five years later, there were 2823 accidents (8.86% of the total), and in 2022 only 1797, i.e. over the past decade, the number of accidents involving them has decreased by more than 51%. Along with a decrease in the number of incidents, the statistics of victims and victims also decreases. Last year there were 53 victims and 1,868 children injured, compared to 90 victims and 3,949 injured ten years ago.
– The safety of children in road traffic has improved significantly in almost all countries of the European Union, and in Poland there has been a faster improvement in the safety of the smallest road users than in many EU countries. However, the largest number of dead and injured children and teenagers is in the group of car passengers, followed by pedestrians. The largest number of traffic accidents involving children and young people occurs in the summer months, especially in June, in the morning and afternoon, that is, on the way to and from school, Anna Zielinska from the Polish Road Safety Service ITS lists.

As for the wounded, among the 403 thousand, 27.6 thousand were injured. children (approx. 6.9% of the total).
