The Japanese win the tests for the safest cars on the market

Must read

The American Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has published a list of the safest cars in 2023 in the US market. Toyota Motor Corporation has received the most awards for its models of any manufacturer.

Among the 15 awarded Toyota and Lexus vehicles were m.in. Corolla, RAV4, Camry and Highlander, as well as Lexus UX, NX, RX and ES 350.

This year’s IIHS Top Safety Pick+ and Top Safety Pick, which is the US equivalent of Euro NCAP, were based on new, more stringent criteria. Therefore, there are half as many cars on the list of the safest cars as a year earlier.

Five Toyota models and all Lexus SUVs received the Top Safety Pick+ award. Some of the safest vehicles you can buy in US dealerships include the Camry mid-size sedan, the large 7-passenger Highlander SUV, the popular Sienna i minivan, and the Tundra pickup truck with two body styles. All Lexus SUVs, from the compact Lexus UX to the mid-size NX and NX Plug-in Hybrid models to the large RX SUV, also delivered exceptional levels of active and passive safety.

The IIHS named the Corolla sedan and Corolla hatchback, Toyota’s three midsize SUVs - the RAV4, Venza and RAV4 Prime (plug-in hybrid), and the Lexus ES 350h sedan - the best choice for safety. All of these cars have shown the highest level of passenger protection in crash tests, have high-quality headlights and effective systems to prevent collisions with pedestrians day and night.

New evaluation criteria

This year, due to stricter criteria, only 48 cars were eligible for the IIHS award. Of these, 28 were Top Safety Pick+ and 20 met Top Safety Pick standards. In comparison, last year, when cars were tested and judged against the previous criteria, the American Institute responsible for vehicle safety evaluation named 101 winners, of which 65 cars received the highest Top Safety Pick + rating.

The biggest change to the criteria for both IIHS awards was the replacement of the longstanding side impact crash test with a vehicle side impact in more difficult conditions. In the updated test, each car must absorb 82 percent more impact energy than before. To qualify for the Top Safety Pick, vehicles must receive one of the top two ratings, Good or Acceptable. The Top Safety Pick+ class requires the highest Good rating.
